Buy more licenses, apparently. Others have already pointed out these defects, which can be spotted even if one has no idea what the code is intended to do. If you're interested in contacting them, send me e-mail, and I'll ask them to contact you. They re-implemented the code or claim to have so that they own the copyrights; I am not minimizing the amount of work needed to make the NR compilation, but I wonder if every single NR routine would really stand up as a non-derivative work on a close reading. According to Ralston and Rabinowitz, however, this is only true if all the roots of the polynomial are real.
But I've found similar problems on occasion with the Numerical Recipes Fortran routine. The discussion of relaxation solvers for elliptic PDE's starts off OK in aboutbut that is OK for a naive user if he is not in a hurry but then fails to mention little details like boundary conditions! Teukolsky, William T. I assume that corporations with big compliance departments get more anally restrictive about these things, but if the NR authors wish to extract licensing fees from corporations, they could do it while offering a more liberal non-profit licensing policy. Numerical Recipes is a good book for learning about numerical methods.
Numerical Recipes. The NR authors, of course, benefited from many years of work by various numerical methods and applied math researchers. These conditions are so restrictive that of course everybody breaks them, often without knowing it. It turns out that what MEDFIT really needs is just a sign, and there's a chance of getting that right, even if the derivative doesn't exist. I can assure you that our results were checked against several standard statistical packages SAS and Systatas well as against an older Fortran program, and NR gives the wrong answer with no warning or other indication of a mishap.

Grant Nov 14 '11 at 3 Who cares what the code is like? When the routine fails to converge after so many iterations, they return Numerical recipes in FORTRAN book. Like any good crack dealer, they want to get the users hooked early. But does anyone have another suggestion?
Cambridge University Press. See Netlib. Code that locks up in an internal loop is unacceptable. It appears that the lines labelled 'fits' in the NR figure More importantly, these restrictive licensing conditions run counter to a tradition in the community of freely sharing software.
Look at the code for "ksprob ". I've found that Numerical Recipes provide just enough information for a person to get himself into trouble, because after reading NR, one thinks that one understands what's going on.
These twin design goals of the language sometimes add confusion to the process of becoming fluent in Fortran 90 programming. They recommend restarting it to reduce this tendency, but the driver routine in the "NR Example Book" version omits this aspect.
Flannery, Saul A.
Do they believe that buying an expensive package would have prevented them from "blowing themselves up"? I guess you could call up your collaborator and describe the modifications over the phone. The moduli are just too low for serious work, and the resulting generators even out too well.
But sampling randomly based on calls for consultation in four areas, and finding ALL FOUR faulty, we have very little Numerical recipes in FORTRAN book in the rest.
Suppose you have a single legitimate NR license, after having bought it beyond Numerical recipes in FORTRAN book cost of the book. But these are implementations of public algorithms.
Two involved the topics mentioned above That is, any Fortran 90 compiler is supposed to be able to compile any legacy Fortran 77 code without error. The second defect arises in the transformation of the flawed theory into an algorithm. The implementations in the chapters are fairly "self-contained" and free of cruft.Numerical Recipes in FORTRAN Example Book book.
